The first night on location, as I returned to my tent for the night under the brightness of the nearly full moon, I could make out the silhouette of an owl perched in the western juniper tree above me. Fleeting shadows of wings in flight crossed the bright grassy openings in the woods. It was hard to sit still enough to record, the owl sounds caught me half undressed and not yet in my sleeping bag and the temperature was below freezing an quickly dropping.
There are two parts in the following recording: first is what sounds like barking calls typical of a short-eared owl, second is an interesting duet of very quiet squeeky peeps which I am guessing might be fledgling owls – though I am still open to suggestion on identification.

May 6 05:20 hrs: Mountain Quail, bird chorus soundscape
I was curious about an animal call shown in the spectrograms and the recording below. The particular sound, an ascending yelp, repeats approximately every 9 seconds and in the spectrogram it can be seen prominently below the the main bird chorus – centered around frequency 1400 Hertz. I am happy to find out, it is the voice of the mountain quail.
